Rabbits have a very unusual calcium metabolism. In cats and dogs, calcium absorption is regulated at gut level, and is adjusted according to the body’s requirements. Any excess dietary calcium passes through and is excreted in the faeces. However, in rabbits, calcium absorption appears to be less well regulated, and indeed appears to be proportional to dietary calcium levels, irrespective of requirements. Excess absorbed calcium is therefore excreted through the urinary tract, often resulting in urine high in calcium precipitate. Sludge in the bladder can result in discomfort and disease in predisposed animals. Vetcare Urinary Health Rabbit Food, provides a nutritionally complete and balanced, daily diet for rabbits of all breeds and life stages (from 20 weeks+). Formulated with Timothy Hay, a low calcium source of fibre, VetcarePlus UTHF is fortified with ingredients that can be beneficial to the urinary system whilst providing high levels of fibre – 28%, with long fibre particles that are ideally suited to a rabbit’s physiological needs. Added Cranberries and Billberries provide natural antioxidants plus Vitamin C – 500mg/kg to help support a healthy immune system. Dandelion & Nettle are natural diuretics. The fibrous nature and physical properties of this Monoforage diet encourage regular water intake and uniquely extends the feeding time, resulting in added dental wear and improved environmental enrichment. |
